Description: This article discusses the outcome of the class-action lawsuit against New York City, to mandate the provision of discharge-planning for mentally ill inmates. To settle the suit against it, New York City agreed to implement a comprehensive discharge-planning program that will follow mentally ill inmates into the community. Before it decided to settle the case, the city lost two appeals of a July 2000 ruling by a state trial court that ordered the city to begin such a program. The suit against the city argued that while city law mandates discharge planning that provides continuity of care for inmates receiving mental health care, the city routinely sends inmates back to the community with no postdischarge agreements in place.
