What a powerful, thought-provoking story!
As a former shelter director, and
someone who now listens as parents and children talk frankly about their shelter experiences, I affirm this mother's observations. The shelter "system" in this country, though run by (mostly) well intentioned people, is broken for a variety of reasons.
And, tragically, one outcome of depending on this broken system is it shatters lives of those turning to it for help.
Can we not do better? With courageous stories like this to motivate us, and by listening with open minds to critiques of our efforts, we have what we need to move in the right direction.
Will we? We have a lot to lose if we don't.
