A significant number of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are involved in the justice system. These individuals are characterized by tremendous diversity in symptoms, functioning level, behaviors exhibited before and after involvement in the justice system, and their response to treatment services. Co-occurring disorders are often undetected in the justice system due to the absence of effective screening and assessment, and to the difficulty in identifying the often complicated symptom picture presented by this population. Non-detection of co-occurring disorders in the justice system can lead to augmented behavior problems, elevated risk for suicide, poor outcomes in treatment, rearrest, and reincarceration. (Authors)
