Description: The authors report on a study which focuses on patients' perceptions of coercion. Conducted in Pennsylvania and Virginia, patients at both sites were given the Admission Experience Interview (AEI), designed to gather patients' perceptions of coercive practices. The AEI covers: (1) attitudes and expectations that reflect the patients' willingness to enter the hospital;(2) events, such as custodial accompaniment to the hospital and other attempts to influence the patient; and(3) the patients' quantified perception of the amount of coercion experienced.
