1999 Exemplary Program Initiative

Outreach VanAuthorized in 1990 by the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act, the Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) program helps homeless people with mental illnesses secure shelter, housing, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and other support services. In FY 1999, 366 community service providers throughout the U.S. assisted nearly 60,000 homeless people with mental illnesses. The PATH Exemplary Program Initiative identifies innovative practices, shares existing information on outcomes, and informs others about services funded and outcomes achieved through the PATH program. Programs were nominated by state PATH contacts and a six-person panel selected seven finalists for FY 1999.
