Description:
Presents a personal account of the author's attempts to receive treatment for her concurrent manic depression and alcohol and drug problems and emphasized the difficulties of attaining help from a health care system geared to the treatment of one disorder or the other (but not both). After being treated separately, and unsuccessfully, for her mental and addictive disorders, the author entered a dual diagnosis program that successfully provided integrated treatment and incorporated the knowledge and perspectives of the client, her family, and health care professionals. The author discusses barriers to care for people with co-existing disorders and provides recommendations for overcoming these barriers. (PsychInfo)
